As already mentioned in TrutH, Princess Mary and
Lord Lascelles will spend the greater part of their
absence from England at Florence. . They will. reside
at the Villa Medici, near Fiesole, which has been lent
to them by Lady Sybil Scott. It is well situated on
the slope of the hill, and is not far from the famous
Villa Palmieri; where Queen Victoria resided for
several weeks during the spring of 1888. The villa, a
picturesque three-storied building dating from. the
fifteenth century, is in perfect order, and the beautiful
gardens have been carefully restored and much
D improved. For many years (1760-1780) the villa
belonged to Margaret Rolle, Countess of Orford and
Baroness. Clinton in her own right, sister-in-law of
& Horace Walpole. She decorated the interior in Chinese
A style, and made many barbarous “‘ improvements,’’ but
# later owners corrected her blunders.
On'Friday the Queen and Princess Mary spent some
time in the beautiful gardens (begun by “ Capability ”
Brown and completed by Nesfield), and they drove to
Goldsborough Hall and inspected this interesting old
house, which has usually been inhabited by members of
the Lascelles family, but has been let for many years
past.

The Temple Newsam Pictures. ;
I mentioned last week the sale of Temple Newsam
to the Corporation of Leeds. ‘The house contains some
splendid Jacobean and Chippendale funiture and all
kinds of old objets d’art, many of them of great value,
together with a large collection of Old Masters and
portraits, including some works of great value. The
portrait of Martin Bucer, by Titian, is a real gem, and
there is a good ‘‘ Charity’’ by Polemberg. In the
same high class is a landscape by Claude. The full-
length of Isabella Marchioness of Hertford, by Rey-
noids, is a superb picture, and there are a couple of
interesting sea pieces by Vandervelde. The greater

Book Sales.
The Wilton House copy of the first edition of Macro-
bius, printed on vellum in 1472, realised £1,050 at
Sotheby’s last week, as compared with £1,600 paid in

Mr. F. M. Drummond, who died at his residence
in Essex, aged 83, was the son of Mr. F. H. Davies,
Registrar of the Court of Chancery, and assumed the
name of his mother, Lady Clementina Drummond, sister
of the fourteenth Earl of Perth and fifth Earl of
Melfort, who was ‘‘served’’ heir male of the third
Duke of Perth. Lady Clementina published in 1872 a
volume of ‘‘ Recollections of Society in France and Eng-
land,’ which had a considerable sale, but was severely
criticised. Mr. Drummond was called to the Bar, and
was engaged in journalism and literary work for many
years.

he was afterwards chaplain at Dusseldorf for four years.
Mr. Connor was very highly esteemed in his parish,
. and had some reputation as a preacher.

of Major-General W. Booth, a Crimean veteran, who
joined the Royal Artillery in 1850. His last command

Colonel H. Booth, served in the Peninsular War with
the old 43rd. :

The King’s speech at the opening of Parliament was
the shortest in history, but far from the least memor-
able. The ‘‘ heartfelt joy ’’ with which his Majesty
hailed the Irish agreement, and the ‘‘earnest hope ”
which he expressed of the beneficent results for both
countries, were certainly not phrases put into his mouth
by Ministers. The speech is to be read with the still

Forthcoming Sales.
The well-known .Irton Hall estate, in Cumberland,
comprising about 5,200 acres, is to be sold in 40 lots to- 4
morrow at Whitehaven. The house is one of the oldest -d
in the north-west of England, and two fourteenth-
century towers still remain. Originally it was strongly
fortified, but was enlarged and modernised in the reign
of Queen Elizabeth. The house is beautifully situated
above the River Irt, and commands extensive views over
the sea. There were Irtons of Irton for 1,000 years.
They were noted Crusaders, and, later on, a member
of the family was knighted at Flodden. At one time the
Irt_ yielded pearls, of which the Venerable Bede has
given an account:
Eastwick Park, near Leatherhead, which has been
in the market, was granted by the Crown to Admiral
Lord Howard of Effingham, of Spanish Armada fame.
The estate (900 acres) remained with the Howards until
1807, when it was sold to Mr. James Lawrel, who built
a large Italian house, with an imposing Done portico.
The park, which is beautifully wooded, adjoins Book-
hany Common.
BOLLINGER’S CHAMPAGNE, Vintage 1914, is one of the finest
specimens of this year.
The handsome French Renaissance house at Overstone
was built regardless of cost in 1862-6 on the site of the
old house, and it stands in a park of 800 acres, which
is an ancient chase, as the Crown licence to ‘‘impark’’
is dated 1254. At one of the entrances is the gatehouse
brought from Pytchley Hall, the Elizabethan hunting
lodge which was a seat of the Ishams, and afterwards
for a long time the club house of the Pytchley Hunt—
noted for good cuisine, good wine, deep drinking, and
high play. The house was pulled down in 1828.

The death of Saint-Saéns at the age of 86 removes
the last remaining link with the great period of nine-
teenth century music. It is often forgotten that when
